Celebrating 125 Years of Constant Progress
In 2026, Wiley|Wilson is celebrating its 125th anniversary — an incredible achievement few A-E firms reach and one that proves the company’s ability to consistently serve clients successfully, shift strategy to meet changing demands, navigate an ever-evolving industry, and create a vibrant ownership culture. Collectively, these traits are what make Wiley|Wilson unique, and they make up the foundation that will carry the firm into its next 125 years.
“We are excited to celebrate this anniversary and to reflect back on the path that got us to this point,” said Neil McSweeney, President and CEO. “Several factors contributed to our longevity in the industry, but none have been more critical to our success than the passion and drive of the employees who contributed their talents to our firm over the years. Every generation left its mark on our company, and we are stronger today because of the dedicated professionals who have called Wiley|Wilson home.”
The company was founded by Mr. Edgar Wiley, who was first and foremost an inventor with a knack for designing solutions to problems people were not even aware they had yet. He patented more than 40 inventions (and was on his way to DC to patent his design for a mechanical reaper but Cyrus McCormick beat him to the office.) His improvements to the fire hydrant are still in use today around the world. After graduating from Virginia Tech he settled in Lynchburg and opened an office on Main Street, offering his mechanical engineering services first to higher ed institutions and local businesses.
“Since its founding in 1901, our firm has been dedicated to delivering solutions for our clients and to discovering new and valuable ways that we can be in service to them and to our fellow employee-owners,” Neil said. “Our legacy in this industry has been shaped by our unwavering commitment to constant progress and to remaining an industry leader in this ever-changing world.”
The company’s founding is just one of its interesting stories. This year, the company will be sharing numerous pieces of its history as it tells “The Story of Wiley|Wilson.” Each “chapter” in the story will provide a more detailed look at key moments in the company’s history, from how it secured its first contract with the federal government to how it became employee-owned. Chapter One features Neil McSweeney, who goes into more detail about Mr. Wiley’s history; how he and Mr. Wilson met and formed a partnership; and what those early days were like.
Maintaining a presence in the A-E industry for more than 125 years requires resilience and flexibility. Wiley|Wilson has succeeded thanks in part to its ability to continually evolve and adapt. Over the years, the firm has expanded its discipline offerings, added offices in key geographic areas, and diversified its client portfolio. What has not changed has been the focus on offering clients functional, dependable solutions to their unique challenges.
“This anniversary gives us an opportunity not just to look back, but to look forward with anticipation on how the next 125 years will unfold,” Neil added. “From new innovations, deeper collaborations, and continued excellence in solving tomorrow’s toughest challenges, we stand ready to continue serving our clients, our communities, and our coworkers with the same passion and distinction that we have exhibited for the past 125 years.”
