Air Traffic Control Tower & Base Building

Wiley|Wilson provided full design services for the construction of a new low activity level Airport Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) at a height of 165’ with a 7,000 SF administrative base building facility. Services included architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, and site design and security. LEED-NC Green building techniques for sustainability were incorporated to ensure that the buildings are environmentally-sound and resource-efficient. The entire life-cycle of the facility was considered, as well as the economic and environmental impact and performance.

Local conditions required a design accommodating a very tight site with security concerns from the adjacent property. Heavy snow loads, drainage issues, and hazardous material abatement were also addressed. Exterior finishes were coordinated to closely match the existing airport terminal finishes. The site layout was designed to meet the latest federal security standards, including blast resistance, while also accommodating the Airport Authority’s vision for future development.

Systems design included full HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection integration. Redundant HVAC and power were provided for all critical areas of the facility. The ATCT was certified in compliance with 29CFR 1960.20.
