Huntsville Air Traffic Control Tower & Base Building
Huntsville International Airport

Like all of our FAA designs, the Huntsville air traffic control tower facility was designed in accordance with FAA Order 6480.7D “Airport Traffic Control Tower and Terminal Radar Approach Control Facility Design Guidelines.” Wiley|Wilson provided full design services for the construction of this new intermediate activity level Airport Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) at a height of 219’ with a 10,000 SF Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) base building facility. Services included architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, and site design and security.

Exterior finishes were coordinated to closely match the existing airport terminal finishes. The site layout was designed to meet the latest federal security standards, including blast resistance, while also maintaining the Airport Authority’s vision for future development. Local conditions required dealing with hazardous material abatement, extensive site drainage/retention facilities, and seismic design.

Systems design for the air traffic control tower included full HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection integration. Redundant HVAC and power were provided for all critical areas of the facility. The air traffic control facility was certified in compliance with 29CFR 1960.20.
