New Research and Education Facility
Monday, May 04, 2009
The Center for Advanced Engineering and Research (CAER) has selected Wiley|Wilson to design its new 30,000 SF research and education facility planned for the New London Business and Technology Park in the Region 2000 of Virginia. The project is made possible in part due to a $7.6 million award from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission.
With a planned completion date in the fall of 2010, the facility will meet the needs of local industry, with research and development in areas of energy, wireless communications and electronics. It will include research labs, simulation areas, meeting rooms for traveling professors, and classroom space for the region’s engineers and scientists.
Design firms from Atlanta to Washington D.C. competed for the contract. “We are thrilled to have been selected to design this innovative facility,” said Tim Groover, President and COO of Wiley|Wilson. “To have been selected over so many other highly qualified firms is indeed an honor. We look forward to designing a facility that symbolizes the world class technical talent we have in our region and provides a place for area businesses and universities to help make this region strong for decades to come.”
Bob Bailey, executive director of the CAER, said Wiley|Wilson was a clear choice due to its recent experience designing AREVA labs, and the fact that it was an all-inclusive firm for the work required. “Wiley|Wilson’s unique interactive design process works well for an organization with multiple stakeholders and requirements, such as ours,” he said. The CAER is a non-profit organization that assists area industries in achieving advances in technology through specialized research and facilitates professional development opportunities for scientists and engineers in the region. It was organized in 2004 through the efforts of Virginia’s Region 2000 Partnership.
