Tappahannock Wastewater Treatment Plant Nutrient Removal Upgrade - Tappahannock, Virginia

In response to the Chesapeake Bay Tributary Strategy’s effluent nutrient requirements that will become enforceable on January 1, 2011, an upgrade project has been embarked upon to achieve 4 mg/l total nitrogen and 0.3 mg/l total phosphorus. The upgraded treatment processes includes a 4-Stage Bardenpho nutrient removal treatment process with insitu chemical addition for phosphorus removal. Tertiary filtration will be achieved via deep-bed sand filters which can be easily converted to achieve denitrification, if needed, in the future.

The project was designed utilizing a 3-D design program. The illustration presented above is an actual view from the 3-D model of the deep bed denitrification sand filter. Creation of this model enabled a complex arrangement of pipes and equipment to be located in the smallest possible area while enabling the client to visualize the project, functionality and operability of the facility early on in the design process.
