AREVA NP Chemistry and Materials Center - Lynchburg, Virginia
Don’t be deceived by its size... this 8,000 SF, two-story building at AREVA’s Mount Athos Road facility houses several laboratories and provides a key service to AREVA’s customers in their ongoing efforts to reduce corrosion damage to plant components and fuel. Using the latest equipment and cutting-edge technologies, the Chemistry and Materials Center (CMC) analyzes radioactive and non-radioactive samples of solids, liquids, and gases from all locations in Pressurized Water Reactor and Boiling Water Reactor plants including reactor coolant, secondary plant water, cooling water, and consumable materials. The CMC also enhances AREVA’s chemistry capabilities by incorporating its global capabilities, including R&D, products and services from European teams.
Wiley|Wilson provided full service A-E design and construction contract administration services. Highlights of the CMC facility include:
- Building designed to H-2 hazardous classification
- Eight laboratory spaces in a radiologically controlled area
- Site selection, conceptual schematic, and final building design
- Zero discharge process wastewater system
- Designed for expansion up to 20,000 SF
- Chemical storage, mechanical and server rooms
- Energy saving high performance fume hoods
- Outside gas cylinder storage area
- Distribution systems for eleven different laboratory gases
- Laboratory spaces are 100% outside air
